Under Sloping Roofs: A Vibrant Berlin Kitchen & Dining Room
This bespoke kitchen and dining room were designed in collaboration with Rainer Spehl for a family home in Berlin. The project embraces bold color and distinctive materials, featuring custom cabinetry in vivid purple and yellow laminate. A striking accent comes from an insert of Memphis laminate, originally designed by Ettore Sottsass, adding a playful graphic touch and celebrating iconic Italian design.
A unique element is the use of Amaranth wood — a deep purple timber — which appears both as a detail within the kitchen and as the primary material for the custom dining table, creating a harmonious dialogue between the two spaces.
The dining room cabinetry continues the yellow theme of the kitchen, enhancing visual coherence throughout the open-plan area.
The kitchen’s architecture is particularly distinctive, tailored to fit the sloped ceilings and irregular geometry of a top-floor Berlin apartment. The island unit includes a softly curved section, lending an organic counterpoint to the sharp lines and vibrant surfaces that define the space.
